The tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN first appeared in the 1623 Cologne hymnal Geistliche Kirchengesäng ("Sacred Church Songs"), compiled by Friedrich Spee. The original composer is unknown. Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged the tune in 1906 for The English Hymnal — the harmonization most modern congregations sing today.
