John Samuel Bewley Monsell was an Irish-born Anglican clergyman and hymn writer, ordained in 1834. He served parishes in Ireland and later in Egham and Guildford, England, where he was Rural Dean and Rector of St Nicholas. Monsell published more than 300 hymns across eleven volumes, advocating that congregational singing should be "more fervent and joyous" than was typical of his era. He died in 1875 after a fall from the scaffolding while supervising repairs to St Nicholas Church, Guildford.

Inspiration

Monsell's hymns emphasize warmth, joy, and devotional intimacy with God — a deliberate counter to the staidness of mid-Victorian Anglican worship.
